Classes and Camp Sewing Supplies

Aerybeth Recommended Products

My sewing students or moms of my younger sewing students ask for my recommendations all the time!
What are the best sewing machines or tools for me or my child to begin this sewing journey?

I love recommending products that will help you enjoy your sewing experience. It’s hard to enjoy sewing if your sewing machine is old or doesn’t work well or your scissors won’t cut! I have used most all the machines and products listed, but I may occasionally list a wonderful sewing item that has great reviews.

More expensive doesn’t always mean better.

Yardstick

You will need long straight edge in sewing!
Connecting dots for cutting lines and lots of measuring!

Measuring Tapes

Great set! You need these because you cannot get a yardstick around your waist or a doll’s waist if you’re making dolly clothing! Also, just in general measuring if you don’t have your yardstick handy.

Sewing Pen
Disappearing and Water Soluble

Another must for sewing is sewing pens, pencils and chalk. This is one of my favorites! It has disappearing ink in purpose and water soluble ink in blue! If you sew quite a bit you’ll need one every few months, but I love it!

Sewing Pins

Sewing Pins. There are SO many different kinds. I have found in teaching children that the longer the pins the easier it is to pin the fabric (more to work with).
These are almost as long as quilting pins, but they aren’t just yellow. We love pretty colors don’t we!? Good price and good length! Do not get the tiny little metal pins. They are terrible to work with.

Sewing Clips

Sewing clips are wonderful to work with. Sometimes you do not need as many straight pins when you have these. You’ll see these in sewing videos. I do like them, and use them, but I’m still old school and like my pins too! Click on the image or the link below to see on Amazon.

Fiskars Scissors
LEFT HANDED

Same great pair as the ones above but for my left handed friends!

Acrylic Ruler Set

Students will not need these for a while. They are great for more advanced students or those who want to quilt. Great to use with Self Healing Mat and Rotary Cutter

Sewing Tools

Tailor’s Chalk

I love my chalk as much as my sewing pens. Sometimes when your pen runs out, you have your amazing chalk!

Also, you need white and the blue because some fabric is light and white will not show up and sometimes it is dark and the blue doesn’t show up!

Brother Bobbins

Class 15 Plastic Brother Bobbins.

Most brother machines and some Singer machines use these. Make sure you get the right kind that goes with your machine. These are flat on top and bottom, not curved. Look at the sample that came with your machine to make sure! Click on the image or the link below to see on Amazon.

Fiskars Scissors

I love a GREAT pair of scissors. I have like over 30 pair since I teach. It’s about time to replace half of them. I have a great pair of shears that are only for sewing that I received as a gift. I love them. However, my favorite pair of scissors is Fiskars. Affordable and they work wonderful! You need a pair or paper cutting scissors too and a little pair of snips for cutting thread of inside small places when you applique.

Fiskars Rotary cutter

Not for beginners or children.
I use these when I cut fabric while using a Self Healing Mat and acrylic ruler. Some love them, some hate them. For me, it depends on what I am cutting out!

Self Healing Mat 18 x 24

This is a mat you can use a rotary cutter on and it will NOT cut your table! Great to put on your dining table to you won’t hurt your finish! This is a larger size!

Sewing Pen - Water Soluble

If you don’t need disappearing ink on fabric, then the water soluble is your next best option. If you don’t plan on finishing your project today, then this is one of the best options. If you use disappearing and you come back tomorrow… well the sewing marks will be gone.
I love the water soluble!

Sewing machine needles

If you have sewn for any time at all, you know you need more sewing machine needles. These are UNIVERSAL needles that range in a variety of sizes and perfect for most anything you are sewing.

Jeans (Heavy Duty)
Sewing machine needles

Occasionally you will need some heavy duty needles for thick fabrics. If you try with a regular needles, you’ll probably be replacing it anyway because it will break on you. You can use this on your heavy projects then put your universal regular needle back in after your heavy project. Don’t forget or it will make LARGE needles holes in your thin cotton fabrics.

Fiskars little scissor snips

Sometimes you need a little pair of pointy sharp scissors for applique or for just snipping off the threads of your project. These are perfect for both.

Self Healing Mat 12 x 18 inches

This is a mat you can use a rotary cutter on and it will NOT cut your table! Great to put on your dining table to you won’t hurt your finish! Click on the image or the link below to see on Amazon.

Sewing Gauges

I cannot tell you how often I use these. You’ll need them for hemming pants, measuring sewing lines from the edge, marking pattern lines for sewing and folding, etc…
